私が捉える「茶道に内在する美意識」
茶道、・・・この道は、単に”表面的な作法”を学ぶ道ではなく、そこには日本文化の精神基盤を構成する「極めて繊細な『美』(beauty)の世界」が内在しています。
一般に、茶道とは、茶室での茶の入れ方・飲み方における伝統的な作法を指し、しばしば、茶の湯とも呼ばれています。茶道は、古くは、室町時代において村田珠光(1423-1502)を祖として始まり、安土桃山時代において、幼少時代から茶の湯の名人・竹野紹鴎(1502-1555)の下で侘茶を学んだ豪商・千利休(1522-1591)が完成させた作法です。千利休は、茶道の心得（精神基盤）として「仏教の『禅の精神』」を重んじました。
千利休は、茶道を「侘」(subtle taste)と「寂」(elegant simplicity)の二つの概念、そして、「一期一会」の心得を基盤として完成させるに至り、時の権力者である織田信長や豊臣秀吉の茶頭を務め、日本の精神文化に多大な影響を与えました。
「一期一会」は、「一生にたった一度の出会い」という意味。この心得は、亭主が茶室で客を迎えるときには、その一時を「『人生最高の一時』(the utmost moment in life)として、心を込めて丁寧に客をもてなす」という精神がそこにあります。この「一期一会」は、千利休の高弟である山上宗二(1544-1590)が著した『山上宗二記』に記されている千利休の言葉、所謂「一期に一度」に由来する言葉として知られているものです。「一期」は「一生」の意味であり、「茶会は、後に再び、同じような時間的空間を経験することのできない”一生に一度の出会いである”」という、亭主と客における心の持ち方について述べています。現在の一期一会という言葉は、江戸時代後期において、井伊直弼が 『茶湯一会集』において「一期一会」と表現したことに由来しています。
さて、茶人が茶会を開くとき、客を迎える主人は、床の間の掛け軸、花、茶碗など、客人をもてなすための道具をたっぷりと時間をかけて丁寧に準備します。通常、茶器の扱い方については、言うまでもなく、一事が万時において、厳格な精神・心構えを基盤として扱うことが求められます。
個々の茶会においては、亭主も客も、茶器や作法ばかりにとらわれるだけでなく、迎える一瞬一瞬において、「気高い心」、そして、「優雅な心」を堅持・維持することが重要となります。かつての千利休が生きた時代、即ち、安土桃山時代においては、どんなに高位の武士であっても、茶室に入るときには、外に刀と身分を置き、厳粛、且つ、平穏な心持の下、質素の限りを尽くした茶室に入ることが重んじられたのです。
茶の湯の精神においては、茶室にて茶を嗜む人物が社会的にどのような身分なのかということは問いません。茶室は、質素極まりない優雅な静寂の空間であり、場を共有する者同士が、お互いの心と心で対話する空間です。千利休は、この静寂の空間で満喫する心と心の交わりの中に、「心の気高さ」の重要性、そして、「心の贅沢」の重要性を見い出し、茶室の中で、実際の価値観・美意識として”具現”することに努めたのです（思うに、2013年の「心不在」の日本の現代社会において、人々が茶道から学ぶべきことは実にたくさんあるでしょう）。
